What is GEOGRAPHY?
Geography is learning about our planet, its places and peoples.

Our geography curriculum aims to inspire children with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its peoples, helping them to understand how our rural community connects with the wider world. We believe it is important to encourage the children to become inquisitive, questioning learners who understand the complex interaction between the physical and human, between people and our environment, and how these relationships change and develop over time.

Throughout their primary school journey, they will learn how to become Courageous Advocates, driven to nurture and protect the natural world; a passion underpinned by our school’s strong Christian ethos.

In EYFS, geography is taught as part of the ‘Understanding the World’ theme of Development Matters, which provides links across the curriculum. We encourage the children to explore our wonderful outdoor area and investigate the plants and animals that we find there, following the children’s interests in learning more about them. We introduce the foundations of mapwork and fieldwork and explore far-flung countries through stories and hands-on activities.

The KS1/KS2 curriculum is divided into four main parts: locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and fieldwork. At Over Kellet we meet the NC aims through engaging lessons and practical activities, including creating our own volcanoes, modelling the layers of the earth and devising and conducting surveys. Our fieldwork takes us from the school grounds to the village and beyond, exploring rivers, woodland, moors and the coast.
