Curriculum Overview

At Wilson’s Endowed CE School we believe all learning should start with the child: What interests me? What do I already know? What will help me learn now? What do I need to learn for the future? Which is why we have create a 50 things to do before I leave Wilson’s Endowed. Every moment is a moment to learn.

To achieve this, we provide a carefully-planned curriculum: knowledge is built step-by-step within and between year groups. We aim to provide all children with the knowledge they need for success at the end of each Key Stage. Subject specific knowledge, vocabulary and skills are taught. Our curriculum is local, hands-on and engaging. Learning is enriched with visits, visitors or other exciting means to capture the children’s imagination. We believe that this makes the learning more meaningful, valuable and exciting for our children.

To make sure children are building knowledge effectively, staff regularly assess their learning in a variety of ways: ‘live’ discussion; daily feedback; weekly quizzing; summative assessment. Understanding each child’s individual knowledge supports each child’s individual progress.

In EYFS, children’s learning is based on a flexible model of teaching, led by the teacher but mindful of children’s interests and growing needs. The children’s seven areas of need are thoroughly covered through a targeted curriculum which prioritises questioning, experience and inquisitiveness. We work alongside parents through online feedback, drop-in sessions and workshops.

In Years 1-6, the children’s wonderful learning in EYFS is built-on through a carefully sequenced progression, developing breadth, depth and flow of learning from beginning to end. Our mixed-age classes allow for children to share their passions and experiences with children of similar ages, while also meeting National Curriculum expectations for all learners through our progression of knowledge.

We provide a high quality of education that educates the ‘whole child’, discovering and nurturing their individual gifts and talents. As a church school, Christian values underpin the curriculum, the approach to learning and the broader life of the school. In turn this supports each child’s growth and development in preparing them for life in the modern world as well-rounded individuals and confident global citizens. It is important to us that every child develops an eagerness for lifelong learning and acquires the skills to make this a practical reality. We aspire to engender in every child a good work ethos, a sense of community and belonging and a commitment to core British values.

We believe that reading and writing are fundamental skills to transfer across the curriculum, and as such, we encourage reading and writing throughout the whole curriculum. Early reading and a sound basis in phonics are crucial for life-long learning.

Christian values permeate every aspect of school life and our desire to nurture our children as they progress through the school means that time is spent in working through the social emotional aspects of learning. This is linked to the pupils feeling safe and providing opportunities to grow spiritually, socially, morally as well as physically.
