What is Music?

Music is expressing our creativity through listening, responding and performing with voices and instruments.

Music plays an integral part in the life of our school. We believe that music enriches the lives of everyone in our school community, no matter what their ability. We ensure that we provide a wide range of opportunities, for everyone.

We support pupils in the development of key skills whilst keeping a key focus on music for personal enjoyment. Pupils are encouraged to find the inner musician within themselves and grow their talents through a variety of opportunities.

As a Church of England school we celebrate singing in our daily worships, as well as in our weekly music lessons, where we embrace different musical genres with both a global and historical perspective.

Our music curriculum ensures we cover all of the National Curriculum aims:

Key stage 1
Pupils should be taught to:
 use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and
rhymes
 play tuned and untuned instruments musically
 listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded
music
 experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions
of music.

Key stage 2
Pupils should be taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control.
They should develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and
manipulating ideas within musical structures and reproducing sounds from aural memory.
Pupils should be taught to:
 play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical
instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
 improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related
dimensions of music
 listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
 use and understand staff and other musical notations
 appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn
from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
 develop an understanding of the history of music.

We ensure we provide many exciting opportunities for children to enjoy music in and out of the classroom.

In EYFS and KS1 the children participate in our nativity performances, where they learn, sing and perform a variety of Christmas songs. 

In Willows class, children join other local schools to perform at Lancaster Town Hall as part of Lancaster Big Sing. 

Oaks class have the opportunity to join hundreds of other children from many different schools, as part of a huge choir at Young Voices.  Upper Key Stage 2 work hard to learn a range of songs and actions. 

Key Stage 2 also have the exciting opportunity to sing, perform and participate in our Summer performance. Last year’s Lion King Show was a huge success.
